Valuable Business Lessons from Jay-Z

When you think of successful businessmen, you probably don’t immediately think of Jay-Z. But you should. In addition to being one of the most successful rappers in the history of music (he’s sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide, has 14 Grammys, and has two albums on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”) he is arguably an equally successful businessman, as owner of the 40/40 Club, part owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, and creator of the clothing line Rocawear.

So what are some of this wildly successful entrepreneur’s thoughts when it comes to business? Have a look.

Dumb down for your audience and double your dollars.
This might come across a bit harsh, but the basic philosophy behind it is sound. If you design or market your product so that it’s accessible to everyone, not just a specific segment, you can enjoy quite a bit of success.

Just because the establishment doesn’t like your ideas, it doesn’t mean you should give up on your dreams.
This is not just a lesson for business, it’s a lesson for life. Anything that you believe in or that you’re passionate about is worth fighting for. Good dreams never die.

Don’t wait for nobody.
Grammar aside, this lesson is probably the most important. So many entrepreneurs never get their ventures off the ground because they’re waiting for the right time, or the perfect moment, or someone in the same industry to test the waters first. Remember that if you wait, you could very easily wait forever.

Stand on your own two.
Another lesson that’s very often forgotten. You don’t need anyone’s approval or blessing. It’s your dream. And only you can make it a reality.

Don’t look at your fall and feel bad.
This one is obvious, but it’s really hard to stay motivated and focused when you fail or encounter setbacks. Just know that they’re bound to happen and don’t dwell on them. You have no momentum at all if you’re not moving forward.

A closed mouth don’t get fed.
Not a very common piece of business advice, but an important one nonetheless. If you never ask for anything, if you never speak up and tell the world what you have to offer, if you don’t talk up your business at every opportunity, you’ll never get anywhere. You are your greatest advocate. Advocate!
