Treat everyone nicely, even those who are rude to you

“Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.” ~Unknown

In this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to treat everyone nicely, even those who are rude to you!

We’ve all dealt with it in some form or another in the workplace. Half of workers say they are treated rudely at their job at least once a week, up from just 25% of workers in 1998, according to a recent article published in the Harvard Business Review. A rude employee brings down the morale of his or her colleagues, decreasing productivity and work satisfaction.

So how do you deal with this? Decide that you are not going to get dragged down into that rude person’s mire. Make a conscious decision to not react negatively when someone is rude. Sometimes this can be tough! While for a moment, being rude back may seem like it will make you feel better, it won’t. We have probably all thought at some point, “I’m going to give them a dose of their own medicine!” Maybe he or she is just having a really bad day (or a really bad life). You never know what has happened to make him or her act negatively. Being rude back only succeeds in perpetuating the cycle. It will affect you negatively, and you don’t want to do or say something that you will regret.

Bottom line: Treat others the way you expect to be treated and you can’t go wrong. It will keep your stress levels down and keep the rude guy’s or gal’s toxicity at bay.
