Teach Someone Something New Every Day

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – William Butler Yeats

In this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to teach someone something new every day!

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of being a teacher in a formal capacity, then you understand that there is nothing as exciting as when you see that spark, that excitement in a student – the AHA! Moment, if you will – when they are truly excited about learning. It’s a wonderful experience from the teacher’s perspective. But you don’t have to be a teacher to experience this phenomenon. It’s something you can experience at any time.

You may think you don’t have much to teach others, but you’re probably wrong. We all have talents or abilities that those around us might not have, but could be useful for them. Maybe you’re really great at making lasagna or Bloody Marys. I’m sure someone you know would love some pointers. It could also be as simple as bringing a historical fact about a particular date to someone’s attention. For example, did you know that today (August 2, 2013) is the anniversary of the official signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776? We’re sure that at least one person learned something new today!

And when it comes to you your work, no matter what it is, it’s likely that someone else can benefit from your knowledge and experience. Go ahead teach someone something new every day!
