Read One Chapter of a Good Book Every Day

“People who say they don’t have time to read simply don’t want to.”

Julie Rugg, A Book Addict’s Treasury

downloadIn this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to read one chapter of a good book every day. Of course, the word “good” is subjective. Choose a book that inspires you, that interests you, that’ll teach you something, or that just looks like a good story. Pick up a reading list from your local library, find a list online, or choose one of the classics. You can even re-read an old favorite.

Got your book? Good. Now, read it. Even with a busy life full of work deadlines, active kids, and a messy house, you can find a few minutes to read one chapter a day. Do it during your commute on the bus or the subway or combine it with one of our other 30-Day Challenges. If you get up earlier, use that extra time to read. Or if you’ve cut down your TV watching time, read instead. If you read just one chapter a day, you can easily read a book a month and that’s a wonderful thing.

We are living in an age where we have access to a constant stream of snippets of information. Sure, those snippets can keep you informed, but if that’s all you ever read, you deny yourself access to the well-thought-out and profound ideas that only good works of literature can provide. Books can open you up to new ideas, challenge your old ways of thinking, and allow your imagination to soar. And with days getting shorter and nights getting colder, this is the perfect time to pick one up.
