Let Go of One Relationship that Hurts You

“Each relationship nurtures a strength or weakness within you.”

- Mike Murdock

reesIn this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to let go of one relationship that constantly hurts you.

Every relationship goes through bumps in the road. Relationships with lovers, friends, and family sometimes feel strained, and that’s okay. What’s important to recognize is how the people in your life make you feel overall. Keep the people who love you for who you are around. These people don’t expect you to change, but encourage you to be your best possible self. They should motivate you, encourage you, make you better, and make you happy. Self examination is important and necessary, but if most of your interactions with someone leave you feeling insecure, sad, or unnecessarily questioning yourself, that isn’t a relationship you need.

Sometimes, relationships continue for years just out of inertia. You were friends since high school! You’ve been married for decades! She’s your mother! Sometimes it’s easier to continue these relationships than work to change them or let them go. But if that friend from high school is still the same mean girl she was when she was 16, kick her to the curb! And even if you can’t or don’t want to leave your marriage or abandon your mother, it’s possible to emotionally leave the relationship even if you don’t physically leave it if that’s what’s necessary to protect your sense of self worth.

You are unique and uniquely lovable. Spend time with the people who think so, too.
