In Business, There’s No Better Teacher than Experience

Whether you’re the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar corporation or an entrepreneur flipping the CLOSED sign to OPEN for the first time, there are all sorts of things you can learn about business. There are books, online resources, seminars, webinars, conferences, and networking events that you can use to help you move ahead with your company.

But one thing that can’t be begged for, bought, or stolen is experience. Real-world experience. The most valuable lessons you’ll learn will come from stepping out there and seeing what happens.

But of course, experience itself is of little value if you don’t learn from it. If you have a problem client and you don’t learn how to manage them and keep stepping on the same land mines over and over again, you’ll never get anywhere. Experience can teach you how to handle those tricky situations, and you’ll be able to apply what you learn to similar situations if they arise in the future.

The most important thing about experience is that not only can you tap business veterans for advice with regard to their own experiences, you can pass yours on to anyone who’s starting out so that they can benefit from it. That said, nothing will replace the experience itself, so do your best to make sure that all your business experiences are good ones — even if they’re mistakes!
