Have a Conversation Every Day with Someone You Rarely Speak To

“Good things happen when you meet strangers.” Yo-Yo Ma

In this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to talk to someone you don’t often speak to.

The friends you collect throughout your life can serve as a life story — reminders of who you once were. We all grow and change in the course of our lives, shedding some personality quirks or passions an acquiring others. Sometimes we lose things we once really liked about ourselves. Talking to old friends you don’t always talk to can remind you of who you were and remind you to bring back the aspects of your personality you used to really like, or be grateful you’re no longer the person you once were.

Having different conversations than the same old, same old around the watercooler can also be eye opening. It can introduce you to new ideas and philosophies and shake up your long held beliefs. And we all can stand to have things shaken up once in a while.

So pick up your address book and start calling old friends. Strike up a conversation with a stranger on the train. Ask the guy in the cubicle down the hall out to lunch. You’ll never know what you’ll learn unless you try.
