Choose Not to Dwell in Fear

After the events in Boston that started with the high of the marathon and ended with a dramatic arrest, a lot of people were feeling drained. Even those not directly affected by the tragedies Boston faced seemed to feel a bit off-kilter. In an article titled “9 Power Quotes for Times of Struggle” on the Marc and Angel Hack Life Blog, a few of the quotes are particularly poignant right now, but all of them can be applied to any type of struggle, whether a huge one like we recently faced in Boston, or a quiet personal or professional struggle.

All of the quotes relate to different life events, but one that is particularly appropriate right now is the first, a quote by Anais Nin. She said, “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

Fear can certainly keep us locked tightly in a little bud. And after a traumatic event or even just a difficult struggle, that reaction is normal – maybe even healthy. The problems happen when we choose to remain there. When we protect ourselves to the point that it takes more energy to remain in a bud rather than follow the natural course of things and allow ourselves to blossom, we do ourselves a disservice.

There’s nothing like spring in Boston. The city is alive with color – the flowering trees, the spring flowers – a stroll through the Public Garden is so healing this time of year. Bostonians should attempt to draw inspiration from their gorgeous landscape and blossom. Amazing things will happen when they do.
