Ditch 3 Bad Habits for 30 Days

“Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.” ~Mark Twain

In this week’s installment of 30 30-Day Challenges You Can Start Now to Motivate Your Work and Life, inspired by Marc and Angel, our challenge to you is to get rid of a few bad habits!

None of these challenges have been easy, but this one could prove toughest of all for most people. Habits are part of our everyday life, and while not all habits are bad habits, we know that a lot of them are. Eating fast food, drinking excess coffee, plopping down on the couch for nightly video game play — these are all activities that are harmful to varying degrees, and pull us down into ruts that are even harder to break than habits. Even seemingly innocuous things we all do in the workplace — spending work time on Facebook, engaging in office gossip, arriving early or leaving late — are habits worth ditching.

This first hurdle in breaking habits is identifying them. Often they’re so ingrained we don’t even see them, but the bad ones often elicit a response — “I should really stop doing that,” or some variation thereof. The next hurdle is being conscious and aware of what you’re doing so you can stop doing it. If you’re on autopilot, you’re sure to fall back into habits, so focus is key.

The idea of ditching 3 habits at the same time may seem insurmountable, but try to cluster some together and do something positive to replace them. For example, if you have a habit of waking up late, drinking a coffee, and smoking a cigarette, try planning a morning run that will get you out of bed and give you something healthier to focus on.

It won’t be easy, there’s no way around it. But you can do it! Ditch 3 of those habits for 30 days, and with a little bit of luck, they’ll be gone for good!
