Incorporate Storytelling Into Your Packaging

Who doesn’t enjoy a really engaging story? Whether it’s the twists and turns of a movie or a TV show, the pages of a good book, or even a tale spun around a campfire, we’ve been conditioned to love a gripping yarn as a source of entertainment, education, and tradition.

It only makes sense, then, to try and include elements of storytelling in your packaging. Take Domino’s Pizza, for example. Where other pizza restaurants have a simple box design that says something like “Come Back Soon,” Domino’s takes advantage of the available real estate with all sorts of fun information.

And of course, all of the information relates back to Domino’s, so they’re engaging you and entertaining you, all while reinforcing their brand and their unique value proposition.

So what can you do to take advantage of this love affair with storytelling? You can start by looking for opportunities to stamp your personality on your packaging. If you’ve got a sense of humor, use it! And instead of run-of-the-mill statements like “Since 1953,” try telling the story of how the company came to be. What happened in 1953? Don’t just give customers the facts and figures — take them on a journey.
